UK charity Betknowmore, has announced its intention to expand a Responsible Gambling programme that will help companies address gambling problems among industry employees.
The programme, which is known as Work Safe and is expected to launch in January 2023, has been designed for Human Resource teams, and well-being teams outside the industry to spot the signs of gambling at work.
According to Stephen Olley, who is heading the Work Safe programme, “with the gambling industry we hadn’t thought to go into it straight away, but we’ve had more and more conversations saying what about us?”
Olley added that it is likely that 1 in 10 people will be somehow affected by gambling. This could be either diagnosing a gambling problem, people at risk of becoming addicted to gambling, or those affected by someone who either has a gambling problem or is at risk of doing so.
Meanwhile, Betknowmore UK’s Head of External Affairs, Matt Smith, said that the charity has “heard about gambling in the gambling industry. It’s probably a bit taboo at times as it’s the gambling industry looking at gambling problems internally, but you have to give them credit for actually doing something about this.”
Smith’s comments came after operators explained to the UK charity that while they have Responsible Gambling measures in place, such measures focus more on clients’ well-being rather than employees.
This is not the first time a company or an entity pushed for stricter Responsible Gambling rules. In October 2022, the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) announced that it will be introducing detailed Responsible Gambling player protection rules for licensees.
